Ford generations explained

Two Fords with the same model name and close model years can be different vehicles under the skin. Generation is usually a better filter than a single model year.

F-150

13th generation (2021-present) brought a fully boxed frame update and a hybrid powertrain option. 12th generation (2015-2020) switched to an aluminum body, lighter but with different repair costs and techniques than steel. 11th generation (2009-2014) is the last all-steel-body F-150 generation, still common on the used market and mechanically simpler to work on for a home mechanic.

Mustang

S550 (2015-2023) introduced an independent rear suspension, a real handling change from every prior generation's solid rear axle. S197 (2005-2014) revived the retro styling cue and is the generation most budget-friendly V8 buyers land on. Earlier Fox-body and SN95 generations (1979-2004) are a different, more project-car-oriented buyer pool.

Explorer

Sixth generation (2020-present) moved to a rear-wheel-drive-based platform shared with the Lincoln Aviator, a real architecture change from every prior Explorer generation's front-wheel-drive-based layout. Fifth generation (2011-2019) is the prior unibody generation, high used-market volume.

Why this matters for parts, not just vehicles

Generation boundaries are exactly where parts fitment breaks. A brake rotor or body panel that fits one generation often does not fit the next, even under the same model name. Check the fitment years stated on a parts listing against your vehicle's actual generation, not just its model name, before buying.
